After majored Conservation Sciences at Tokyo University of Science (Tokyo), he joined Japan Science Foundation/Science Museum in 1981 as a curator, he worked for La Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie (Paris) from 1987 to 1988 and from 1993 to 1997.
He earned his Ph.D. in world heritage studies from the University of Tsukuba after completing his graduate certificate at the Ecole Nationale du Patrimoine (now, National Institute of Cultural Heritage) in Paris in 1996.
Since 1998, he teaches Museology and Knowledge Management in cultural institutions at several universities. His areas of expertise include theoretical museology, cultural resources management, cultural heritage studies, digital archives, collection management and museum documentation, and the history of architecture. He is currently involved in research projects in Turkey, Libya, Tunisia, China, Korea.
He is a founder and the President of the Museum & Culture Advanced Research Center in Asia Pacific (MARC-ASPAC). Now, he serves as Vice Chair of ICOM-Japan, Vice President of Japan Museum Management Academy (JMMA), editorial board member of International Journal of Intangible Heritage (IJIH, Korean National Folk Museum), advisor for Counsellors’ Office of the State Council (COSC, China) and member of ICOM Disaster Relief Task Force (DRTF), Board Member of ICOM / ICOFOM (Museology Committee). He has published several monographs was awarded by the Japanese Museum Association (2011) and the Museum Management Academy (2002).
